Frequently Asked Questions
Can diet really help my teenager's acne?
Yes, research shows strong connections between diet and acne. High-glycemic foods (sugar, refined carbs) and dairy can worsen acne through insulin and IGF-1 pathways. Many teens see significant improvement reducing processed foods, sugar, and dairy while increasing vegetables, whole foods, zinc-rich foods, and omega-3s. However, acne also involves hormones, stress, and genetics. Comprehensive approach including nutrition, proper skincare, stress management, and targeted supplements often works best. Severe acne may require dermatological care alongside natural approaches.
Is it normal for my teen to have irregular periods?
Some irregularity in the first 1-2 years after menarche (first period) is common as the hormonal system matures. However, very irregular cycles, extremely heavy or painful periods, or cycles not regulating after 2 years warrant evaluation. PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, and other hormonal imbalances can begin in teen years. Early identification and treatment prevents long-term complications. Naturopathic care can support cycle regulation, reduce heavy bleeding and cramps, and address underlying hormonal imbalances through nutrition, lifestyle, and botanical medicine.
What nutrients do growing teens need most?
Teens have increased needs for protein for growth, calcium and vitamin D for bone development (peak bone mass is built during teen years), iron especially for menstruating females, B vitamins for energy and mood, omega-3 fatty acids for brain development, zinc for growth and immune function, and magnesium for stress, sleep, and muscle function. Many teens eat insufficient vegetables, protein, and whole foods while consuming excess processed foods and sugar. Quality multivitamin, omega-3, and vitamin D are good foundations, with additional iron for females if labs show deficiency.
