Hypomenorrhea

hy-poh-men-oh-REE-ah

Definition

Hypomenorrhea is a menstrual pattern characterized by abnormally light menstrual flow with regular cycle timing. Unlike amenorrhea (absent periods) or oligomenorrhea (infrequent periods), hypomenorrhea describes periods that occur on schedule but with unusually scant bleeding, often lasting fewer than two days.

Why It Matters

Light periods can indicate low estrogen levels, thin uterine lining, hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, or may be a side effect of hormonal contraceptives. While sometimes benign, persistent hypomenorrhea warrants evaluation to rule out conditions affecting fertility and hormonal health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Light periods can be normal for some people, especially on hormonal birth control. However, if your periods become significantly lighter without explanation, or if accompanied by other symptoms like fatigue or difficulty conceiving, evaluation is recommended to rule out hormonal imbalances.

Support healthy menstrual flow by optimizing estrogen balance with phytoestrogen-rich foods, ensuring adequate body weight and healthy fats, supporting thyroid function, managing stress, using blood-building herbs like nettle and red raspberry leaf, and addressing any underlying hormonal imbalances.
