Fertility Window

Definition

The fertility window is the 6-day period during the menstrual cycle when pregnancy is possible—the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in fertile cervical mucus, while the egg lives 12–24 hours. Intercourse during this window maximizes conception chances.

Why It Matters

Understanding your fertility window significantly improves conception chances. Couples timing intercourse within the fertility window have up to a 30% chance of pregnancy per cycle, compared to minimal chances outside this window. Tracking ovulation signs helps identify your unique fertile days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Methods include tracking cervical mucus changes (fertile mucus is clear, stretchy, egg-white consistency), using ovulation predictor kits (detect LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation), monitoring basal body temperature patterns, tracking cycle length, and using fertility awareness apps.

For optimal conception chances, have intercourse every 1–2 days during the fertility window. Daily intercourse doesn't significantly improve chances and may reduce sperm quality. Every other day ensures fresh, healthy sperm while maximizing exposure to the fertile window.
